Welcome to the Tarantula Forum. Here you may post messages or questions pertaining to the keeping of live and/or preserved specimens of tarantula spiders. Tarantulas are the common name for spiders primarily of the family Theraphosidae, and approximately 900 species of these hairy and sometimes quite large arachnids are known.

The most popular of the spiders kept as pets, they are also well represented in preserved collections. Two of the more popular species commonly available in the pet trade are the Chilean rose tarantula (Grammostola rosea) and the Mexican redknee tarantula (Brachypelma smithi) though other species are often available, including the giant's known as "Bird Eaters".

In captivity tarantulas are usually fed prey items such as feeder insects, pinkie mice, and small feeder fish in their water bowl. Though venomous and packing a painful bite, none of the true tarantulas are known to be deadly to humans, though allergic reactions are known
